TOYOTA’S NEW CEO HINTS THAT THERE WILL BE MORE SPORTS CARS INTO FUTURE LINEUPS

Newly appointed CEO of Toyota Koji Sato wants more sports cars in Toyota; branded under GR

After Toyota’s recent success from their current sports-car lineup including the all-new GR Yaris, 86, Supra, and Corolla rolling out this year, it’s safe to say that current CEO Koji Sato would want more sport-infused automobiles in the future.

With the departure of the company’s previous CEO, Akio Toyoda, many speculated if Toyota would create exciting sports cars in the future. Under Toyoda’s direction, iconic sports cars like the GR Supra would not have been revived nor would the 86.

After 14 years, Akio decided to leave his position as his vision did not align with the future outlook of the industry as it transitions to EV’s and alternative fuel. Akio wanted to continue to create fun interesting cars and felt it was best for the company to hire a new CEO. After his announcement of stepping down, he still remains a chairman of the board of directors for Toyota.

In April, Lexus President Koji Sato was officially promoted to CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation and many believed that Toyoda’s absence would cause the new CEO to scrap production of future performance cars and further the development of electric cars.

However, this may be untrue. Sato made a statement to Autozone:

“The Gazoo brand will be acknowledged for the future – and maybe we can even speed it up”. He continues “Our Master Driver (Toyoda) was also president of the company at the same time as he held a steering wheel in his hand for Gazoo. Now he is only chairman maybe he will have a lot of time to develop cars for them?”

Providing fun-affordable performance cars for everyone to enjoy has been Toyota’s approach to enthusiasts. Something light-agile and able to tune-up if needed.

As of now, there have been rumors circulating about the resurface of another iconic Toyota sports car, the MR2. In 2021, Toyota unveiled plans for their future EV concepts which included an image of a two-door sports car.

In addition to that, in early 2023, Japanese auto publication Best Car claimed a new turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0L mild hybrid sports car was in development with Suzuki. With these rumors and claims making their rounds, it’s not fair to say that Toyota will be releasing anything new soon until an official statement comes from Toyota.
